Coupons are sometimes a wonderful thing as long as you know your prices !!  The problem that The Czar sees over and over again is that the consumer has jumped on the “coupon mania bandwagon” and races down the aisles purchasing what the manufacturer wants you to buy and only those items.

Believe me the manufacturer is not the “Tooth Fairy” bringing you these coupons just because you are a nice person, they crave market share and will use whatever tactics or promotions to gain YOUR MONEY !

When The Czar observes a shopper that is really trying to do the right thing by using this “magical coupon” they usually do not even look at the competition that may be located directly above or below or beside this “magical coupon” item. The .50 cent coupon that may actually double to $1.00 is dangerous because we take our focus off comparing prices thinking wow,I just saved $1.00.

Most of the items listed on The Czar’s list do not have coupons. The reason The Czar lists items that do not require coupons is simple, think about the number of items we purchase on our visit to the supermarket that NEVER HAVE COUPONS !!

Here are a few items that come to mind: shrimp, steaks, ground beef, milk, garlic powder, light bulbs,pork chops, tomatoes, potatoes,strawberries,butter,eggs and many, many more items ! TIP: Buy 1 instead of 2 and save 50% unless it is a high usage item.

Remember the store has to make up for the loss leader item somewhere else. You must avoid the temptation to overpay on 25 items for the 1 or 2 items you save on.

Saving $1.75 on peanut butter or $2.00 on crackers, and then overpaying by $4.00/lb on steaks and $2.00/lb on chicken breasts or a $1.00 more for butter or $3.00/lb too much for coffee leaves you in the hole. The store wins.
